The Shoulder Join or Three-Needle Bind-Off
This is so exciting. I always get such a sense of satisfaction after I
join the shoulders and hold the sweater up in my hands.
We are going to join the shoulders using a 3 needle bind off. It isn't
hard.
First, we have to put all the back stitches from the scrap yarn onto a
needle. I slipped them onto my second body needle, but if you haven't bought
it yet, just slip them onto your rib needle.

With right side facing, insert needle point as if to purl into first
stitch on scrap yarn. Continue in this manner until all the stitches are on
the needle. Remove the scrap yarn by pulling gently.
You now have all the back stitches on one needle and two sets of front
stitches on another. Turn your sweater inside out. Turn it so the front of
the sweater is facing you and the two needles are lined up at the top.

My front needle is black.
I have the front of the sweater facing me. I am holding the two needles
together in my left hand.
With my right hand, I am going to pick up the other point of the black
needle and use it to work my bind offs.
To bind off. Insert the right handed needle into the first stitch for the
front needle as if to knit, and then insert it into the first stitch of the
back needle as if to knit.
Knit the two stitches together. You now have one stitch on the right
needle. Insert the needle into the next stitch on the front left needle and
the next stitch on the back left needle. Knit together.
There are now two stitches on the right needle. Lift the second stitch
over the first to bind off. (This is the same as you did for the front neck.
The only difference is that we are knitting two stitches together from the
front and back needles first.).
Continue in this manner until there is one loop left. Break yarn and pull
tail through the loop.
Look at our beautiful shoulder seam.
Now, turn the work around so that you have the back facing you. The work
is still inside out. Slide the stitches to the needle points. The back
needle has the front shoulder stitches, the front needle the back shoulder
stitches. Work a three needle bind off across the shoulder stitches.
You will have the back neck stitches remaining on the needle. Slip these
stitches onto the scrap yarn.
Turn your work right side out and admire!

Can you believe it!
